Day 15 – Mushroom Steaks with Green Peppercorn Sauce and Eggplant Fries

Dinner

Last nights dinner was a combination of a few different recipes, the eggplant fries from here, the green peppercorn sauce from here  and the mushroom steaks which are an old favourite of mine, thrown into the mix to give the eggplant fries something to sit next to.

For the mushroom steaks, you will need (per person):

1 large flat mushroom

1 tsp worcestershire sauce

1 tsp light soy sauce

1 tsp olive oil

salt and pepper to taste.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl, tossing the mushroom to coat it evenly in the sauce. Set aside while you do the prep and assemble the ingredients for the other dishes.

mushroom

Once ready, coat a frying pan with non stick spray or oil and fry the mushroom over a medium to low heat until it has begun to brown. Transfer to finish cooking under the grill on a very low heat for about 10 mins, and use the frying pan with the mushroom juices to make the green peppercorn sauce.

Eggplant

I modified the seasoning on the eggplant fries to include some smoked paprika and cayenne pepper, but in retrospect a simpler, less spicy flavouring might have been better. The fries were a little overpowering along with the strong flavours of the mushroom and the peppercorn sauce.

In all, this meal has potential, but needs a little modification before I would consider making it more regularly. Each component worked individually, but together they fought for attention and the overall experience suffered.
